Spencer Pigot: The Season Is Finally Here
It seems like it’s been ages since the end of the 2015 Indy Lights season and my last race in an open wheel car. I’ve been looking forward to this coming weekend since I started karting when I was nine years old, my first ever IndyCar race. Even though the off-season has been very long it’s also been very busy. To name a few of the off season highlights; I signed for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, competed in the Daytona 24 Hours in the Mazda Prototype and just finished a two day test in the IndyCar I’ll be racing this weekend.
During the past few months I’ve been traveling to all of the tests that Graham Rahal has been doing with the team to learn more about the car and how the team operates. Finally, it was my turn to test last week in Sebring. I hadn’t driven an IndyCar since I did a half day test with Team Penske at Sonoma Raceway in August last year. Only having a two-day test the week before the first race isn’t ideal but we made the most of it and had a great test. It was great working with everyone at RLL, they have all been extremely helpful in my transition from Indy Lights, teaching me everything I need to know about the car. In total I did about 300 laps around Sebring short course over the two days. We made a lot of progress with the handling of the car as well as my driving. I had to work on picking up the techniques this car requires to go fast. Over the two days every team and driver in the series was there and we were very pleased with how competitive our lap times were.
Now it’s off to St. Petersburg for my first Verizon IndyCar Series race at a track that has been very good to me. Over the past five years I have 5 wins, 8 podiums, 4 pole positions and never finished worse that 4th out of 10 races. I couldn’t think of a better place for my first IndyCar race and hopefully the strong results continue this weekend.
TUNE IN: The race will be Live on ABC at 12:30pm EST on Sunday, March 13th
