What Was Your Shining Moment?
2014 marked the start of my ninth year as an IndyCar fan. After spending the entirety of my teenage-hood wishing and dreaming of being at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the month of May and attending multiple races per season, I lived the dream.
My experience as a fan this season had too many shining moments for me to pick just one. Finally experiencing the month of May trackside proved to be everything I hoped it would be, and more. Having the opportunity to stand on the grid during the opening ceremonies for the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis ranks as one of my most unforgettable life moments thus far. It seemed as though every second I spent at IMS included a moment of thankfulness for simply being present where I was.
I found that spending so much time at the track also caused me to grow as a fan. I went from being a fan of two or three specific drivers to cheering for 85% of the field all at once. There’s something about seeing the drivers work in person that makes you feel more connected with their stories. Had it not been for my experiences at IMS, I may never have grown to become such a big fan of drivers like Mikhail Aleshin, Sage Karam, and Josef Newgarden.
I also had the great privilege of meeting and getting to know tons of crazy IndyCar fans like myself throughout the year. By the time I attended my fourth race of the season at Mid-Ohio, I felt that I was always mid-conversation with another fan, even though I spent the weekend at the track by myself. Nothing makes me happier than to know that IndyCar has such a friendly, welcoming fan base.
I could ramble for hours about my countless highlights of the 2014 IndyCar Series, but I want to hear yours. I want to hear what it was this year that made you say, “This is why I’m an IndyCar fan. ”
