No driver in Australian motor racing is any hotter at the moment than the two-time Supercars defending champion Scott McLaughlin, and the veteran racer has parlayed that momentum into an INDYCAR Rookie Evaluation test session at Sebring International Raceway on January 13.
While McLaughlin isn’t expected to make a jump to full-time open-wheel competition just yet, the prolific supercars driver will have a chance to add to his illustrious profile by testing a Team Penske Dallara IR-18 next month.
“I am always open to new challenges and I’m thankful to Team Penske for providing this opportunity to test an Indy car,” said McLaughlin, who logged an impressive 18 victories in Virgin Australia Supercars competition this year – a record.
“We had an amazing year in 2019 and I’m looking forward to defending our Supercars championship next season. I’m also excited to grow as a driver and being with Team Penske creates cool opportunities to try something new. Although I have spent a few hours in a simulator earlier this year, it’s going to be a blast to see what one really feels like at a place like Sebring.”
McLaughlin drives for Team Penske’s Supercars division – DJR Team Penske – and joined the team in 2017. Since then, McLaughlin has amassed 35 victories and 44 pole positions en route to winning the series championships in 2018 and 2019.
Additionally, he was part of a two-man crew that won the Bathurst 1000 in October – a race that IndyCar veterans Alexander Rossi and James Hinchcliffe finished 18th in.
“Scott has been incredibly successful for DJR Team Penske over the last three seasons and he has become a true champion of our sport,” said team owner Roger Penske.
“He certainly embraces new challenges and we think this is a great opportunity to utilize the IndyCar Series rookie testing program so Scott can experience what it is like to get behind the wheel of one of our Indy cars.”
An interesting note to add – McLaughlin is a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500… on iRacing. The New Zealand native won two top-split races during the event in 2015.
McLaughlin is only 26 years of age, and drives the No. 17 Shell V-Power Ford Mustang for DJR Team Penske.
