CHANGE TO ABC BOOTH BRINGS ADDED PROFESSIONALISM
By Zach Tasker
The recent Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg saw a new lead anchor for the IndyCar on ABC portion of the schedule. Well respected NASCAR talent Allen Bestwick now heads the booth for 5 races on the network TV station (plus the two days of Indianapolis 500 qualifications).
For not having any background in IndyCar racing Bestwick sounded like a true professional. He picked up all the nuances of open wheel racing quickly and was able to feed off of Eddie Cheever and Scott Goodyear. The ABC broadcast had already improved tremendously from its product last year which many fans criticized.
There even was some banter between Bestwick and Cheever when they were discussing the controversial Will Power restart, this reminded me of the days of the old Indianapolis 500 broadcasts on ABC when Sam Posey and Bobby Unser would have a good natured argument on the telecast.
NBCSN, while having great coverage (starting this weekend with the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach) has a limited reach compared to ABC. It is imperative to the success of the series to have a competent and professional broadcast team for their 5 races. I for one, am looking forward to the rest of the season with Bestwick and company.
