The first 45-minute practice session of the Honda Indy 200 race weekend is in the books. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon led the way as 23 drivers participated in the Friday morning practice.
In a relatively uneventful practice – which all teams certainly enjoyed since Mid-Ohio is the third of three straight weekends that IndyCar has raced – the Honda camp showed quite well.
Seven of the first twelve positions belonged to Honda drivers – though Chevrolet did hold three of the first four positions on the leaderboard.
With a quick lap of 1m6.0973s, Dixon was a full tenth of a second quicker than the next closest competitor. His challenger was Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot, who registered a lap at 1m6.2455s.
Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud (1m6.2665s) and Josef Newgarden (1m6.3064s) also represented Chevrolet in the top five, while James Hinchcliffe carried the Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports banner by slotting in fifth overall at 1m6.3611s.
Rounding out the top ten were Ryan Hunter-Reay, Will Power, Felix Rosenqvist, Sebastien Bourdais and Max Chilton.
Other notables included Meyer Shank Racing returning with Jack Harvey behind the wheel as the No. 60 was 11th on the time chart, while Andretti Autosport quasi-teammates Colton Herta (12th) and Alexander Rossi (13th) followed Harvey on the leaderboard.
Rosenqvist and fellow rookie RC Enerson (driving for Carlin this weekend) completed the most laps of all drivers with 24 each. The entire field was separated from first to 23rd by less than two seconds, and the first 12 positions were just 0.95s apart.
We have one more 45-minute practice on-deck for this afternoon, which rolls off at 3:15 PM Eastern. The session, as with all practices this weekend, can be seen via the NBC Sports Gold IndyCar Pass.
