At first it was a big pleasure to come to Mosport because I love the track and I was sure to have a fantastic car in the super fast corners in Canada! The “bad” thing was that we got an adjustment in the BOP which gave us less boost, so less straight line speed. And the straight line from Mosport is loooonnngg….
Practice 1 went well but without timing and scoring it was so hard to know where we were compared to others. Our balance was not bad but a bit too much oversteering in entry. I had an issue in practice 2 so I basically didn’t run.
Practice 3 went ok with some improvement on the car, but I didn’t get a good lap time because of traffic even though I had new tires.
Before qualifying we made some big changes to help the oversteer in the turns and increased the front grip on the middle of the corner. The car was great and to be honest, putting all my best corners together wouldn’t have been a lot quicker, maybe 0.08s. P4 was basically our maximum on one lap with the BOP, which we had for this race.
The race 1 start was a rolling start and I had an “ok” one on the outside from row 2 but I tried a move on the outside of Turn1 and it went well so I passed P3 there and was on the inside of Beretta in T2 and could pass him there.
After that the race was without any big changes to me as I was a bit quicker than O’Connell but couldn’t pass him in the straight. On the last restart the Bentley went on the inside of me in turn 1 but I could resist on the outside and made it back to P2 until the checkered flag.
Race 2 was a standing start. It was not our best start but enough to stay P2. After a few laps we got a full course yellow, which by the way came a bit late as we were at full speed into T1, when a flatbed crossed the track right in front of us 2 laps before the full course appeared. At the restart Beretta overtook me in T1 but I surprised him into Turn 5B and got my P2 back. In the straight, Beretta and Davison were fighting for position behind me and by the end of the straight they were able to pull on both sides of me. I stayed straight and even before touching the brakes for T8, Beretta made an aggressive turn in on the outside and touched me on the left front which brought me sideways into the Nissan. After banging around between the 2 cars, I went into the run off area which is made of Tarmac and grass. After a big scary moment I managed to bring the car back on track in 12th position. I gave everything during the next 35min and got back to P6 with some nice passes and good laptimes.
It was great to drive in Mosport but I have some frustration not being able to bring back a second podium in race 2, which would have been possible without a way to aggressive move from the Ferrari on the outside of a 5th gear corner at a speed of 275km/h.
Next race is in Detroit. We will give it everything as always and I hope for a “no contact” race!
