Pirelli World Challenge CTMP Preview

While many race fans are focused on the Indy 500, the Pirelli World Challenge went north to Canada. The Series is racing at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. The circuit is a 2.458 mile, 10 turn permanent road course. It is hosting rounds 8 and 9 for the GT, GTA, GT Cup; GTS rounds 7 and 8; rounds 4,5 and 6 for TC, TCA and TCB classes.

Qualifying for the TC, TCA and TCB classes were held Thursday with Ernie Francis, Jr taking the pole in the TC class. In TCA, Elivan Goulart took pole while Travis Washay took the pole in TCB. Race 1 is at 12:50 Friday and you can watch live streaming here.

Let’s preview the TC class first. Cody Ellsworth is your points leader and qualified third for the first race.pjgroenke His closest competitor will be starting right beside him in fourth, Adam Poland. This could be a very interesting start to the race and they will need to be careful not to take each other out. Throw in the fact that there are two cars in front of them, and turn one could be a lot of fun. Jason Cherry, our Open Wheels contributor, starts in 10th position. Keep an eye on Jason as he usually qualifies better. I expect him to move his way up the field and get a top five finish.

In the TCA class, Jason Wolfe is starting in second place and is second in the point standings. He can gain a lot of ground in the championship as Tony Rivera is not racing. What’s intriguing is who is starting 3rd and 4th. Shea Holbrook and Paul Holton were on the same team last year, although Holton drove in the TCB class. Shea is running a partial season, concentrating on jet dragsters in the IHRA. Paul is also running a partial season as he is a full-time driver in the Continental Tire Sports Car Series. If you don’t know who either of these drivers are, you will after this race. I would pick either one to win this race. Emilee Tominovich, Open Wheel Contributor, is starting 8th. This is her first full season in TCA as she has done a couple partial seasons and is on a great team. She will be looking to move up and I fully expect her too. It’s a very competitive series so every tenth of a second counts.

In the TCB class, two guys that haven’t raced in the series are first and second. Johan Schwartz, your championship leader, qualified third. He has a big lead in the points but second place Glenn Nixon is starting right beside him. Can these two, duke it our for the win? P.J. Groenke, Open Wheels Contributor, is starting 9th and is 7th in the championship. He is looking to get his groove on and get on the podium again. There should be some intense battles on the track so keep an eye out for the in-car camera replays from some of these drivers.

Who do you think will win round 4 in these three classes. I’d enjoy hearing from you so please comment or tweet me @Open_Wheels. I’ll preview the GT, GTA, GTS and GT Cup tomorrow.
