Tonight, the NTT IndyCar Series will run the fifth and final oval of 2019. For the 10th time, the newly renamed World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway will host IndyCar. Before the green flag for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, here’s some of the pre-race headlines.
Headed into the weekend, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden held a 35-point lead over Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi. After qualifying on the pole, he added the bonus point to that lead. With a two-lap average of 186.610 mph, Newgarden will look for his fifth win of 2019 and second win at this track.
From his third-place starting spot, teammate Will Power looks to make it two in a row at the track and this season. On Sunday, Power won a rain-shortened Pocono Raceway event.
Alongside Newgarden on the front row will be Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Sebastien Bourdais. Although rookie teammate Santino Ferrucci led the opening practice, it was Bourdais earning his first front-row start since ISM Raceway in April 2018.
Continuing to drive the No. 59 car on ovals, Carlin Racing’s Conor Daly impressed by leading last night’s final practice. Tonight, Daly will roll off 18th on the grid.
For Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay, tonight will be a special race. The 2012 series champion makes his 250th career start and will look for a reversal of fortunes at this track. In two previous starts here, Hunter-Reay has failed to finish.
Additionally, Indianapolis 500 winner Simon Pagenuad makes his 150th IndyCar start.
