Morning Warm-Up went green at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and saw some familiar faces at the top of the time sheets. Alexander Rossi continued his blistering weekend pace, setting a time of 1:07.537. Rossi was yesterday’s Verizon P1 Award Winner and will start from pole position this afternoon.
Behind Rossi was Scott Dixon with a time of 1:07.627. Rossi’s teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay, who was quick in the practice sessions but could not quite put it all together in qualifying, posted a time of 1:07.804.
Two Penske teammates rounded out the top 5 with Josef Newgarden posting a time of 1:07.995 and Simon Pagenaud lapping the circuit in 1:08.020. The top rookie runner of the session was Zachary Claman De Melo in 12th with a time of 1:08.560.
Gabby Chaves brought out the red flag briefly with around 8 minutes to go in the session when his car ran into the run off area at Turn 8. He stalled the car trying to spin it around and rejoin.
The AMR Safety Team re-fired him quickly and the session resumed shortly after. Zachary Claman De Melo locked up at Turn 7 and his #19 car stalled in the run off area with just under two minutes to go bringing our another red flag and the checkered to end the session.
