The Verizon IndyCar Series closed out a busy day on track with a one-hour practice session under the lights at ISM Raceway on Friday night. Carlin Racing’s Charlie Kimball, who will roll off 22nd tomorrow night, paced the field with a best lap of 179.797 MPH.
Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon finished second, with Tony Kanaan (A.J. Foyt Racing), Alexander Rossi (Andretti Autosport) and Gabby Chaves (Harding Racing) rounding out the top five.
Kanaan’s teammate Matheus Leist was the fastest rookie in the session, posting a 15th-best speed of 175.689 MPH. The lone incident of the day occurred with less than 10 minutes remaining in the session.
Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot made contact with the wall in Turn 4. Pigot coasted to pit road unassisted following the incident. After Pigot’s contact, the session was extended by 10 minutes.
Polesitter Sebastien Bourdais posted a best lap of 174.116 MPH, putting him 21st on the speed chart in his Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser Sullivan entry. Joining Bourdais on the front row will be countryman Simon Pagenaud. The defending race winner ended the final practice session 12th, with a best lap speed off 176.407 MPH.
The 23-car field was separated by .897 seconds, with all drivers breaking the 172 MPH barrier.
This was the last session before Saturday night’s race. The 250-lap event at the 1.022-mile oval is set for a 9:40 pm Eastern time green flag.
