Practice three from the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach saw some new faces at the top of the timesheets. All weekend long, Andretti Autosports’ Ryan Hunter-Reay and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon have been trading P1 and P2 during practice. However this morning’s session featured last year’s Long Beach winner Alexander Rossi at the top.
Rossi posted a time of 1:07.059 on the very last lap of the session to set the fastest time of the weekend so far ahead of qualifying this afternoon. Graham Rahal, who pipped Dixon for P1 earlier in the session, posted a fast lap of 1:07.187 in his #15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan machine. Scott Dixon held on to third place in the session with a time of 1:07.226.
Ryan Hunter-Reay finished within a tenth of a second behind Dixon on the timesheets with a lap of 1:07.295 to go fourth. Rounding out the top 5 for the session was Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud with a time of 1:07.403. The top four runners were powered by Honda while the 22 of Pagenaud had Chevy power in the back.
Other notables from the session included rookies Colton Herta, Felix Rosenqvist, and Patricio O’Ward nearly on top of each other with times of 1:07.479, 1:07.495, and 1:07.505 respectively. The trio finished 7th, 8th, and 9th. Fellow rookie and former Sauber F1 driver Marcus Ericsson posted a 1:07.643, his best time of the weekend and 14th in the session. Rounding out the rookie class was American Santino Ferrucci with a time of 1:07.966, good enough for 20th.
The session stayed green for its entirety, however three drivers stalled on track and needed to be re-fired by the AMR Safety Team. Will Power was the first to stall early in the session followed by Takuma Sato and Matheus Leist. Sato and Leist both stalled their cars in Turn 9 at the end of the back straight and were re-fired in the run off area.
Qualifying is next at 12:10PM Pacific time from the streets of Long Beach. Coverage will begin on NBCSN at 11:45. Follow the NTT Data IndyCar Series this weekend and all season long here on Open-Wheels.com and @Open-Wheels on Instagram for photos and video.
