Another piece of the Indianapolis 500 puzzle has fallen into place for 2019. Dreyer & Reinbold Racing has announced that they will return to the Greatest Spectacle in Racing this May with Sage Karam piloting the No. 24 WIX Filters Chevrolet.
“I can’t wait to be back with WIX and DRR for the 2019 Indianapolis 500 and I’m looking forward to putting our No 24 WIX Filters Special in victory lane,” said the 23-year-old Karam. “This year is WIX Filters’ 80th anniversary and I’m excited to help them celebrate throughout the year and represent them on the track.”
In five starts at the Indianapolis 500, Karam has a best finish of 9th in 2014. It was his rookie run with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, and the Nazareth, Pennsylvania native hasn’t finished the 200 laps since. Karam has had strong runs in the interim, though, leading two laps in the 2016 race and working his way into the top-10 last year before exiting on lap 154.
This will be the fifth start at Indianapolis for the Karam/DRR pairing, and team owner Dennis Reinbold is still a stout supporter of the young driver.
“Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and WIX Filters have enjoyed a great seven-year partnership and we’re thrilled to bring WIX back to the Indy 500 in 2019 with Sage,” said Reinbold. “WIX has been a leader in its category for 80 years and has made numerous valuable contributions to motorsports industry as well as to Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. We want to put WIX Filters in the winner’s circle this year and Sage will be a solid contender.”
As mentioned above, Karam and DRR will once again be powered by Chevrolet. It is unclear at this time whether or not Dreyer & Reinbold will pair Karam with a teammate – an experience he enjoyed in 2018 with J.R. Hildebrand in the stable.
Nonetheless, the focus is moving forward to Karam and taking aim at seeing the checkered flag in 2019. He feels that the team will be sitting pretty on May 26 if they can see the race through to the end.
“It’s hard to believe this Indy 500 will be my fifth with DRR and each year we have had a strong race car,” Karam added. “We’ve run in the top 10 each time and we just need to get to that checkered flag again. My racing mindset has improved each year and I’m ready to take the No. 24 WIX Filters DRR car to the front on May 26.”
