Sarah’s Street Stories: “Love for Open Wheel Racing” – Matt B.

Thanks to Matt B. for sharing the story about his love for open wheel racing!
I started watching Open Wheel Racing in 1996. My first race was on TV, the Long Beach grand Prix. I continued to watch Cart throughout the 1997 season. I attended the Motorola at Gateway back in 1997 at 9 years old. I was amazed at how fast the cars were back then. They went past you so fast, you couldn’t tell who they were.
Throughout the years, I have watched and supported both Indy Car and Cart/Champ Car. My favorite driver in Indy Car back in the 2000’s was Wheldon, Andretti drivers. My favorite Champ Car driver was Paul Tracy and Justin Wilson. Basically, anyone that could beat Bourdais.
I have attended races at Gateway. I was too young to experience the paddock but still had a blast and was really bummed out when they decided to no longer come back.
When the Reunification happened and the rumors were becoming a reality, I felt like a little kid at Christmas. I was really supporting the merger.
My 2015 plan was to maybe attend the Iowa and Milwaukee race but can’t due to work but hopefully I can attend Milwaukee and Cleveland.
As 2015 has started, it’s a new beginning with the aero kits and the competition. I always enjoy meeting Indy Car fans whenever I can. I met some at a Nascar truck race at Gateway.
Thanks again for your contribution, Matt! As always, all fans are invited to share stories.
