Supercross: Entertaining the Masses

Facebooktwitter

This past weekend, supercross was in Indy again, and I was lucky enough to get to go! As I sat with a friend of mine we compared supercross to other motorsports platforms, and came up with an interesting conclusion. Supercross really knows what they are doing marketing wise.

I counted no less than 24 sponsors of the series, and countless sponsors on bikes, jerseys, and helmets. Lucas oil stadium was full all the way up the the rafters, and every person you saw had a smile on their faces. They are doing something right!

I think it starts with the accessibility of the drivers and crews. They do a “pit party” at each race where for a nominal up-charge you can walk around and see everyone working. This brings the fans right up to the bikes and riders, and it doesn’t get much more exciting than this.

Next, they keep everyones attention throughout  the long (almost 11 hour) day of events. They keep the riders on the jumbotron while there is track work going on. They do interactive questions about who the fans think will do go, and they allow fans to text and see their comments on the big screen. People get really passionate about the rider that they are cheering on, but everyone plays nice.

On to the actual racing, I was on the edge of my seat the whole night! The racing is amazing, and far more entertaining than some of the other types of motorsports. They have figured out how to make it a show, its not all about just the racing or just the riders, they blend together to keep people entertained. Despite what some series think, motorsports is supposed to be about the entertainment factor, and Supercross gets it right every single time. I for one love watching in person or even on tv, just to see how it will shake out.

Check it out, they will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final jump over the finish line.
