The first race day of the month of May is upon us, IndyCar fans! Today the stars and cars of the NTT IndyCar Series will battle for 85 laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in the sixth annual INDYCAR Grand Prix, and Open-Wheels is here to get you ready for your day at the track.
Public access gates at IMS open at 7:30 AM and will stay open until one hour after the IndyCar race concludes. Today will see each level of the Road to Indy – Indy Lights, Indy Pro 2000 and USF2000 – take to the track for the second round of their doubleheaders, plus of course, the INDYCAR Grand Prix to cap off the afternoon.
USF2000 will roll off with the first race of the day at 9:15 AM Eastern, then Indy Pro 2000 will follow them with their race at 10:10 AM Eastern. The Road to Indy races will be broken up by a 30-minute NTT IndyCar Series final warm-up beginning at 11:15 AM, and then the Indy Lights race starts at 1:15 PM.
Once the Indy Lights race concludes, all eyes will be set on the INDYCAR Grand Prix.
Driver introductions begins at 3:00 PM Eastern, and at 3:05 PM, Bronze Badge holders can take a stroll down the grid for 30 minutes. Holders must enter and present their Bronze Badge at the South Pit Gate or Victory Podium, and those are also the two exit points.
At 3:29 PM we will have the Presentation of Colors while the singing of the National Anthem will occur at 3:31 PM. Finally, at 3:43 PM we will get the command for ‘Drivers, Start Your Engines.’ The green flag for the INDYCAR Grand Prix is scheduled for approximately 3:50 PM Eastern.
Once the race is over, check out the post-race track invasion! Fans will have an opportunity to walk on the race track shortly after the checkered flag flies by using a variety of entry points to access the famous circuit.
Now if you were at the track on Friday you certainly noticed the cool temperatures and lack of sunshine. Thankfully, Saturday has started out sunny and we hope that it will hold!
AccuWeather is calling for a high of 61 degrees Fahrenheit today under partly cloudy conditions. Rain is possible in the afternoon, meaning we could see wet weather tire strategy come into play during this year’s INDYCAR Grand Prix.
