Well folks, we won’t lie to you – today is going to be a challenging affair at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
After beautiful, warm, sunny conditions at IMS through the last few days of practice and qualifications, the threat of severe thunderstorms on the horizon greets us as we wake up in Indianapolis this morning. Yesterday’s run of 230.083 miles per hour by Spencer Pigot in round one of qualifying might be enough to take the pole, because if rain washes out the festivities today there will not be a Fast Nine shootout at a later date.
In the event of rain canceling all on-track activities today, the late afternoon practice would also not be re-scheduled, but the Last Row shootout will indeed be completed in its entirety at the next possible on-track opportunity – whether that be Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.
Today we are looking at thunderstorms threatening the Speedway from any time between 11:00 AM Eastern and 4:00 PM – right in the heart of our day. Gates open at 9:00 AM and pre-qualifying practice begins at 10:15 AM, with the Last Row shootout commencing at 12:15 PM. We may have a window of opportunity right in the middle of the day, but it will be tight.
Yesterday we saw Fernando Alonso and McLaren bumped out of the top-30 locked in spots, Pippa Mann redeem herself from heartbreak in 2018, and James Hinchcliffe crash on his qualifying effort – putting the No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Honda in danger of missing the race once again.
What will happen today? Well, honestly, you’re guess is as good as mine!
