The days just keep clicking off, and just like that we are staring down Fast Friday and qualifications! It is Thursday, May 16 and the action is heating up – along with the forecasted temperatures – for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500.
Yesterday saw seven hours of on-track activity, including another Team Penske driver atop the leaderboard in Josef Newgarden, plus an unforgettable moment when Fernando Alonso lost control of his No. 66 McLaren Chevrolet entry and was forced to a backup car after his Wednesday crash.
Teams will get another seven hours of practice time today and fans can expect more of the same action we saw Wednesday for Thursday. While there were some individuals who prioritized single-car runs yesterday, many teams took part in multi-car packs to simulate race runs.
At times there were trains of 7, 8, 9 and even 10 cars all lined up in a mock race run, trying to understand their car’s balance in traffic to either build confidence or learn what the teams need to work on. Both Alonso, and the other Wednesday accident driver Felix Rosenqvist, were trailing lead cars before their crashes.
Looking into today’s action, the weather looks to be favorable once again. After a cold and rainy INDYCAR Grand Prix last Saturday, temperatures have been steadily rising with consistent sunshine warming the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Temperatures for today will nearly reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit, one of the hottest days of 2019 thus far. Clouds and sun should mix up the conditions throughout the day, and the afternoon heat could span a brief shower or two – but the chance for precipitation still stands under 20%.
