Rookie Zach Veach was the fastest driver in opening practice for Sunday’s ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway. The No.26 Group 1001 Honda for Andretti Autosport driver ran a fast lap of 217.393 MPH (41.3997 seconds) on Lap 21 of 32. Honda-powered drivers occupied seven of the Top 10 spots including title combatants Alexander Rossi (Third) and 2013 winner Scott Dixon (Fifth).
Of the three Chevy drivers, defending series champion Josef Newgarden was second at 217.016 MPH (41.4716 seconds) in the No.1 Hitachi Team Penske Chevy. Tony Kanaan and Simon Pagenaud were the other Chevy’s in sixth and seventh respectively.
Two-time defending race champion Will Power was 11th at 214.907 MPH (41.8786 seconds) in the No.12 Verizon Team Penske Chevy. Former Pocono winner Ryan Hunter-Reay was 17th in the No. 28 DHL Honda for Andretti Autosport.
With only four races to go, the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion needs a strong run tomorrow to stay in the title race. Dixon leads Rossi by 46 points, with Newgarden trailing by 60 points. Power sits 87 points behind from a possible second IndyCar title.
After qualifying this afternoon, the teams will come out for final practice at 4:45 PM. Keep it on Open-Wheels.com for all the news and updates from The Tricky Triangle.
