NEFF: Previewing the Day Before the 500 at the Open-Wheels 500

Ahead of Sunday’s Open-Wheels 500 presented by Mitchell Transmissions, today will be filled with on-track action, including iRacing editions of the traditional Carb Day festivities – the Pit Stop Competition and the Veterans 100.

Brandon Traino, the defending winner of the iRacing Indianapolis 500’s feature race, put his No. 9 machine on the pole last night in Veterans 100 qualifications at a new record speed for that race – 196.170 miles per hour. Teammate Christopher Demeritt will start alongside him.

The Pit Stop Competition, which will utilize 17% capacity fuel tanks to encourage multiple stops and reward drivers with quick pit-in and pit-out deltas, will surely bring end-of-the-day excitement, with both races being shown on RaceSpot TV.

Last year, Brendan Lichtenberg won the Pit Stop Competition while Lluc Ibanez won the Veterans 100.

In addition to those events, the drivers participating in Sunday’s 200-lap event on the 2.5-mile virtual Indianapolis Motor Speedway have a final one-hour practice session, following their mid-morning drivers meeting.

Here’s a look at the rundown of events for Saturday’s action.
